Lean times in Westeros

At least the weather is nice. Something to consider when you often have to sleep under the stars. But all in all, the long, summer-drowsy king's peace that Westeros is going through is definitely not the best of times to be a sellsword.

Though there's always a merchant who wants a couple armed men to escort his wares on the long road, or a petty noble who needs to augment his household guard during a squabble with a neighbour those are small jobs. Small jobs and far between, with small pay and no less risk to get you an arrow in the eye or a blade through the gut than those other, more abundant and better paid jobs you can find during wartime.

The company doesn't help all that much, either. Chiggen seems almost eager to resort to banditry as soon as times turn for the bad. Bronn finds that attitude short-sighted and dangerous. Though hardly above reproach himself, he'd rather not be hanged, as bandits usually are during peace-time, when restless knights have precious little to do but hunt them down.

So they head for the Crossroads Inn, which was once called The Two Crowns. Sitting at the crossing of the Kingsroad and the great road of the Riverlands, there's always a good chance of finding work there. And lacking that, it's as good a place as any to spend the last few stags in their purses and think of their alternatives.
